The Healing Muse, the annual journal of literary and visual art that is published by Upstate Medical University’s Center for Bioethics and Humanities, is looking for artists and writers for next year’s fall publication! We welcome fiction, poetry, narratives, essays, memoirs, drawings, photography, and graphic art, particularly but not exclusively focusing on themes of medicine and healing. Submissions are collected and juried from September 1st through May 1st. The editors try to respond to submissions within three months’ time (with the exception of the visual art submissions. These are selected after June 1st.) The maximum length of text is 2,500 words (typed double-spaced). Poetry need not be double-spaced. We recommend that you read excerpts from one or two issues before you submit your manuscript.
All submissions should be sent to:

Authors are asked to submit hard copy manuscripts and SASE for return of original manuscripts. Please put the word count on the first page. We ask authors whose work is selected for publication to email us their work as an electronic Word file, to note if their prose is fiction or non-fiction, and to enclose a three-line bio (fifty words maximum) for our Contributors’ page. Manuscripts and artworks are considered with the understanding that they have not been published previously in print or electronic format (including the Internet). We ask authors whose work is accepted to sign a statement declaring that their work has not previously published by them or under another name. The editors screen submissions carefully for plagiarized. Accepted manuscripts are edited and returned to the author for approval. Confidentiality. The privacy of patients and clients of healthcare practitioners should be protected. Physicians and healthcare practitioners who write about their patients must alter identifying details and characteristics.Contributors will receive two complimentary copies of the issue in which their work appears; additional copies are available at a reduced rate.
