Do You REALLY Want to Be a Professor?

In her continuing summer series for academic writers in Inside Higher Ed, Kerry Ann Rockquemore asks the toughest question for faculty struggling to meet the expectations for tenure or promotion: “Do You REALLY Want to Be a Professor?”

If after reflection the answer is “No,” Rockquemore offers some thoughts about an “exit strategy.” (Note: When you’ve tried everything–and I really mean EVERYTHING–to make a career path work, there’s no shame in concluding, “This isn’t working; time to move on.” Nursing faculty in this situation have some very rewarding options, which I can’t say for faculty in most disciplines!)

However, if the answer is “Yes,” Rockquemore suggests ways to re-engage your career goals.

As in her previous columns in this series, Rockquemore offers a concrete weekly challenge of practical steps.
