In today’s Inside Higher Ed, Carmen Werder and Karen Hoelscher urge faculty to take “Time Out to Write.”
They note that faculty writers are not very different from student writers, so the advice we give to students is applicable to faculty:
- Schedule writing time for real.
- Schedule your optimal writing time.
- Identify your personal patterns of distraction and take steps to minimize them.
- Write first, e-mail second.
Scheduling writing time and eliminating distractions are behavioral changes that work, though they might not come easily.
